M96/M97 RMS Tool Directive

This directive is imperative if a 9X6 has not yet been updated with the newest PTFE low tension RMS (Rear Main Seal) as this represents the highest quality seal that is available.

During the 2005 MY (Model Year), Specifically October, 2005 (Reference TSB), Porsche introduced an all new low tension PTFE coated RMS. The new PTFE RMS is a low tension oil seal meaning it has no internal lip spring. The internal sealing lip should not be touched by your fingers; the acid on your fingers could damage the PTFE coating.

In combination with the new PTFE coated RMS, Porsche also introduced a new RMS installation tool (9699) combined with a new tool insert (9699/2) for the latest RMS tool.  Note, the new PTFE RMS houses a plastic protective insert inside the RMS lip for transportation and installation purposes only. The new tool insert (9699/2) utilizes the plastic RMS insert to help install the newer style PTFE RMS. Porsche stated that no oil or lubricants should be utilized on the inner lip to aid in RM seal installation.

Please note: The 9PA, 9PA1 & 92A (Cayenne) and 970 (Panamera) RMS Tool holds the RMS seal plastic insert also but utilizes a different tool entirely. These models utilize the originally released 996 RMS tool bell but have their own insert, to match the Cayenne and 970 Crankshaft bolt pattern.
