What to do with an IMS failure

  1. Clean all metal from engine best effort.
  2. Remove engine sump plate, cut swirl pots open and inspect for any debris.
  3. Install LN spin-on oil filter & filter magnet and LNE magnetic drain plug.
  4. Fill with break-in (cutting) engine oil.
  5. Run for 20 minutes in shop = Change engine oil and filter. Cut filter open and inspect.
    If none or very minimal debris is found continue to step 6, otherwise repeat.
  6. Run for 60 minutes = Change engine oil and filter. Cut filter open and inspect.
    If none or very minimal debris found continue to step 7, otherwise repeat.
  7. Run for 100 miles = Change engine oil and filter. Cut filter open and inspect. If none or very minimal debris found continue to step 8, otherwise repeat.
  8. Run for 1000 miles = Change engine oil and filter. Cut filter open and inspect.
    If none or very minimal debris found continue, otherwise repeat.
  9. Switch permanently to 3000 miles (maximum) oil change intervals.

Note: At every oil change, cut the engine oil filter open to check for any debris in the oil filter! Remove IMS tensioner & check for ferrous metal in pocket in engine.
